The Junior season runs over the Saturdays in the school terms 2 and 3. Every game is played at Keith Hay Park North, starting at 8.30 for 5th, 6th and 7th grades, 9.15 for 8th grade, and 10.00 for 9th grade. The Coffee Guy is in attendance, and there is food and drink available at the clubrooms.
Cancellations will be notified by an update on the website. It is a winter sport and we will endeavour to play if the council grounds are open. In addition you can sign up to Sportcheck to receive a text, at a cost of 50 cents, to alert you of any cancellations. Just follow the link to the left, enter Juniors and your Grade, you do NOT need to enter your team.
Once you have enrolled at TKU Football Club your child or children will be placed into a grade. The grades relate to the year they were born (not school year).
- Born in 2005/2006 = 5th Grade
- Born in 2004 = 6th grade
- Born in 2003 = 7th grade
- Born in 2002 = 8th grade
- Born in 2001 = 9th grade
Objectives of Junior football
- Scoring goals
- Having fun
- Fair play
5th Grade
5th Grade is different from all other grades because players are not put into teams. The format is based around an introduction to basic soccer ball skills, co-ordination, agility, and having fun while learning and playing.
6th & 7th Grade:
The Junior Committee will form teams on the basis of common schools, address, etc. There will be no trials in these grades. Where possible requests to play with friends will be considered.
8th & 9th Grade:
There will be a Platinum league and also Gold and Silver leagues. Any player who wishes to trial for a Platinum team, should nominate this on their online enrolment form, and they will have a trial. Requests to play with friends can not really be considered here, as the objective is to place players in a league based on the trials, and then to try and have even teams within the leagues.
Football Gear
Players will need TKU shorts and socks. A shirt will be provided by the club. The team shirts should all be washed and kept together (by player of the day?), and not taken home separately.
Soccer boots, shin pads, balls, shorts and socks will all be on sale at the clubrooms. All players should have their own, named, size 3 ball. Payment for these purchases is made directly to Champs Sports.
Get Involved
We have a small team of parents, the Junior Coordinators, who are volunteering their time to effectively run the Junior grades. Our objective is that football should be fun.
We also need lots of parental involvement. Parents can be involved in coaching, or managing a team (which is a different role). Parents can also be involved in supporting the coaches, by helping running skills sessions, or trainings, or even just keeping the balls ready on game day when they go out of play allowing more game time. Generally the more successful and enjoyable teams have lots of different people involved and helping the coach.
If you wish to help in some way, please indicate this on your online enrolment. The club supports coaches through coach education sessions, and other training aids such as the skills sessions listed below, as well as some coaching ideas on the Coaches section on the About page on our website.
At all times please be encouraging and supportive. Praise your children and other children, including the opposition. Football should be fun.
Administration
If anyone has difficulty with fees or other questions regarding enrolment or administration then please contact the Junior Administrator prior to registration - contact Melissa Hore - Club Administrator, telephone 09 624 5665 / mel.andy@ihug.co.nz
